A Sheriffs' lawsuit is moving forward in Thurston County challenging a state law that gives an oversight board the authority to remove elected sheriffs from office. The state law requires sheriffs to have five complete years of full-time law enforcement experience, no convictions for felonies or gross misdemeanors, be at least 25 years of age and nothing on record that would challenge their state certification as a peace officer. The challenge to the law claims it is unconstitutional. The actions are currently being in separate courts around the state but the hope is to consolidate the matters and have one court/ judge decide the law’s fate.
