Over the past year law enforcement has not enforced laws against failing to yield to school buses with their stop signs extended. Why? Because the cameras affixed to the buses to observe and monitor such action have gone unchecked. Ostensibly this has allowed hundreds to avoid receiving a spendy $500 ticket for violating the law. Lucky them. The issue is that an agreement which authorized such ticketing expired in August 2022; the King County Prosecutor’s Office stopped providing review services, citing a lack of capacity and a refocusing of priorities. The question is will this agreement ever be renewed? Since the contract's expiration Seattle Public Schools has been engaged in talks with the Seattle City Attorney's Office about re-initiating enforcement. Thus, it is probably only a matter of time before the cameras are again reviewed and violators ticketed, especially because the school year is only weeks away.
