2020 has begun and there has been no shortage of DUI arrests since the beginning of the new year. New numbers released by the Washington State Patrol show that as of last week 200 drivers have been arrested for suspicion of DUI in just King, Pierce, and Thurston counties alone; and those numbers are only for WSP, not other law enforcement agencies.
In District 1 (Pierce and Thurston Counties) there have been 96 arrests for suspicion of DUI since 2020 began. Comparatively, 94 drivers were arrested by troopers in District 1 in 2019 during the same time period, and 105 drivers were arrested by troopers for suspicion of DUI in 2018 during the same time period.
In District 2 (King County) there have been 106 arrests for suspicion of DUI since 2020 began. Comparatively, 118 drivers were arrested by troopers in District 2 for suspicion of DUI in 2019 during the same time period.
In short, the numbers appear to be the same for 2020 as they were 2019 and perhaps even 2018, at least for District 1. That begs the question, are the DUI emphasis patrols accomplishing their intended and stated goal? Perhaps not, but the year is young. So, be safe out there.
