An infrastructure bill awaiting a pivotal vote in the US Senate would require new cars to have technology to detect drunk drivers. Backers of the bill claim the anti-drunken driving provisions would drastically reduce the number of automotive deaths that occur on our U.S. roadways. The provisions of the proposed bill order NHTSA to study the feasibility of various technologies and establish a final rule within three years mandating some form of anti-drunken driving technology in new cars. Such systems could include, among other things, devices that: (1) monitor a driver for signs of distracted, impaired or fatigued driving, or (2) use sensors that scan drivers’ eyes for signs of impairment, similar to what police officers look for when they suspect someone is impaired by alcohol – i.e. Horizontal Gaze Nystagmus (‘HGN’). It will be interesting to see how far down the road this proposed bill will get; there is no doubt many hurdles will have to be navigated. As they say, time will tell. So ... stay tuned.
