Senate Democrats passed a bill last week that, if passed, would ban firearms and other weapons (i.e. explosives and slungshots, sand clubs, metal knuckles, knifes, daggers, dirks) in more public spaces, including parks, government buildings and county fairgrounds (when open to the public). The bill now goes to the House and then to the Governor. If all goes as planned, the bill will officially become law on July 26, 2025. Under the new law, knowingly possessing a weapon(s) in the added spaces will result in a person being charged with a gross misdemeanor, which carries with it the potential of 364 days in jail and a fine of $5,000. People with concealed carry permits would be exempt from the new law.
