House Bill 1062 aims to make defendant’s statements inadmissible in court if police use deceptive tactics during interrogations to get those statements. Interestingly, nine other states have already passed such measures, but have limited it to juvenile cases, only. The thought in Washington is eliminating deceptive tactics would: (1) keep innocent people out of jail, and (2) instill trust between the public and law enforcement. It is believed that current interrogation tactics encourage bias and leave people vulnerable to the power imbalances between law enforcement and citizens. House Bill 1062 aims to quash this problem and ensure that the right people are convicted for their wrong choices.
